What To Expect from EngageAI This Year

Author: Gabrielle Lue and Emma Braaten

In its fourth year, the EngageAI Institute continues its focus on creating AI-driven narrative-centered learning environments. We envision a future of learning where students are actively engaged in the classroom and all participants, including educators, can find support through emerging technologies and collaboration.

In 2025, our outreach will expand as several exciting components of our work take shape that provide opportunities for increasing community engagement with educators across the country. (It’s no surprise that AI took the education world by storm last year, and we don’t foresee this slowing down anytime soon.) Here is a look at a handful of things on our horizon:

  • Throughout late summer/fall 2025, we’re planning to offer an exciting opportunity to participate in the development of an AI tool where teachers will author short narrative-based learning experiences for use with their students.
  • The practitioners within our Practitioner Advisory Board are continuing to think with us and inform us more about AI ethics in practice; we are having great learning conversations between research and practice.
  • We’ll be hosting a one-day convening where expert researchers and product designers have a day of exploration and discovery, focused on how AI can increase students’ active engagement in the science classroom. It’s a priority that humans remain in the loop throughout any AI development and we want educators’ input on how to build a useful product that teachers can deploy in their classrooms to improve student outcomes.
  • In addition to the events we host, we look forward to participating in numerous other AI-related events and conferences. In March we will celebrate AI Literacy Day, in collaboration with many other education organizations in the sector. This day is an opportunity for anyone interested in increasing their understanding of AI to come, learn, and explore through the different avenues available. Stay tuned for more information on in-person and virtual event offerings.
  • This year will serve as the second annual convening for the AI K-12 Deeper Learning Summit in Anaheim, CA. Researchers and practitioners from our Institute will be speaking and presenting on advocacy tools that we have created to support educators with AI’s increasing involvement in their classrooms. Sarah Burriss, Kip Glazer, Judi Fusco will present on the EngageAI AI Bill of Rights for Educators; in this session they’ll discuss how the flexible framework allows for evaluating AI systems in schools and will give participants applicable scenarios. This conference is currently expecting hundreds of participants from the local area, as well as those traveling from different states, and we look forward to speaking with new communities.
